7 power batteries last for 400 kilometers, energy density up to 161Wh/kg

On June 11 this year, the country’s new subsidy for new energy vehicles was formally implemented. Calculated according to the new policy of 2018, after the purchase of cars on June 12, the models with a battery life of more than 400 kilometers will receive a state subsidy of 50,000 yuan, which is nearly 20,000 yuan more than before.

Currently, the passenger car consumer market is still dominated by A00-class models, which account for about 67% of the market share. The market share of A-class vehicles will remain at around 20%. Under the premise that the demand for new energy passenger vehicles is relatively saturated, passenger cars and vehicle enterprises have become the key customers of current power battery companies in the future market.

To this end, the list of power battery companies supporting more than 400 kilometers of cruising vehicles in the sixth batch of recommendation catalogues of this year has been specially scrutinized:

Among the 52 new energy passenger vehicles (46 pure electric vehicles and 6 plug-in hybrid vehicles), there are 13 models of pure electric vehicles. There are seven power battery companies supporting them, namely BYD and Ningde. Times (Pred), Ningde Times (Wuhu Qida), Xinwangda, Gateway Power, Ha Guangyu, Huasheng Power, Miaosheng Power.

From the perspective of the power battery technology, Sanyuan is still the mainstream of passenger car applications. There are 7 types of 13 models equipped with ternary batteries; 3 types of models use lithium iron phosphate batteries, and its supporting battery companies have BYD, Huasheng Power.

In terms of energy density, a Sichuan Mustang electric multi-purpose passenger vehicle equipped with Miaosheng Power lithium-ion battery has the highest level of 161Wh/kg. Although Beijing Automobile has only one model over 400 kilometers, it is still in the list of models. It is the highest, reaching 460 kilometers. Powered batteries and PACK were provided by Ningde Times and Pride respectively.

From the perspective of the number of battery companies, BYD has the largest number of models on the list, and the number of matching batteries has reached 5; followed by the Ningde era, there are 3 models equipped with its ternary power battery. Miaosheng Power, Jiewei Power, Ha Guangyu, Xinwangda, and Huayi Power have one supporting model respectively.

So, to meet the car company 400 kilometers battery life, which impact on the battery company?

One of the most obvious effects is the energy density

Theoretically speaking, as the "heart" of new energy vehicles, the higher the energy density of the power battery system of an accessory vehicle, the higher the endurance capacity of a new energy vehicle. From the above table, it can also be seen that there are 10 models with system energy density above 140Wh/kg.

This is also the current state of the art, including the Ningde times, BYD, Guoxuan Hi-Tech, Yi Wei Lien Energy, Fu-Energy Technology, China Aviation Lithium Electric, Far East Foster, and other mainstream power battery companies. Under the premise of ensuring safety, or importing high-nickel materials, silicon-based Materials, or increase research and development of soft bags, is dedicated to improving the fundamental reason for the energy density of the battery cells.

In addition to improving the energy density of batteries from materials and technologies, the most important thing for battery companies is to ensure the safety of power batteries and not to compromise on safety in pursuit of pure energy density. This also puts higher requirements on battery company technology.

At present, battery companies are upgrading their own production hardware conditions and are transitioning from semi-automated to intelligent production unmanned workshops before 2015. While striving to improve the safety, consistency and reliability of batteries, it is also a mainstream approach to proceed with thermal management.

The third is the lightweight design of the PACK link

It is worth noting that to satisfy the cruising range of the vehicle more than 400 kilometers does not mean that only high energy battery system energy density is pursued. As shown in the above table, the energy density of the system supporting JAC Power is 125.9Wh/kg, and the energy density of the two models of BYD lithium iron phosphate battery is 105.72Wh/kg.

According to the feedback of battery companies, under the premise that the energy density of the battery cells alone is not sufficient to support a 400 km passenger car, the car companies must choose to install multiple batteries. However, too many batteries will inevitably increase the overall weight of the vehicle, and ultimately affect the car's 100 kilometers of power consumption.

In order to solve the above problems with the car companies, power battery companies must be lightweight design in the PACK. At present, battery companies have tried to use lightweight aluminum shells, liquid-cooled plate support methods, or in a special PACK link with silicone adhesive for module bonding, to achieve the purpose of lightweight systems.
