Energy-Efficient Steel Solutions Drive Special Lightweights Further

April 24th, 2012, Shanghai – With the concept of lightweighting of special vehicles being further promoted in China, Ruukki Roche jointed with the China Automotive Engineering Society Special Purpose Vehicle Branch, and was present in Qingdao, Wuhan, and Guangzhou on April 23–27. The "High-strength Steel Application Technology Symposium" was held to discuss how to use high-strength steel to achieve lightweighting. The rapid development of China's special-purpose vehicle market has become the world's largest special-purpose vehicle market. However, there is still much room for improvement in terms of its product technology and specifications. Compared with European standards, the average weight of China's special vehicles is 17% higher, which means more fuel consumption, more carbon dioxide emissions and lower loads. The key to solving these problems lies in the application and process of new materials. By lightening the vehicle, it can save up to 37%.

At present, the multi-material body structure design has become a development trend. Through the optimization of the body structure, it can not only improve vehicle performance, but also significantly reduce its own weight. Current high-strength steels, wear-resistant steels, and aluminum materials have become the main materials for the relevant combinations, emphasizing the use of suitable materials for the appropriate parts. Among them, high-strength steel and wear-resistant steel are mainly used in heavy-duty trucks and road dump truck bodies, semi-trailer girders, pull-arm hooks, and rack arms.
