The European Union said on the 27th that it has applied to set up a dispute resolution team at the World Trade Organization (WTO) to resolve the issue of China's restrictions on the export of rare earth minerals and stated that it has no choice but to prosecute.

According to a report from Reuters, in response to the complaints filed by the United States, the European Union and Japan regarding China’s rare earth export policy, the WTO held formal consultations in April this year with a view to reaching a resolution with China.

The EU Executive Committee stated that in order to oblige China to comply with its international obligations, it will cooperate with the United States and Japan in this matter to sue China to the WTO.

In an announcement, the EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht stated: “China’s restrictions on rare earths and other products violate its WTO commitments and continue to seriously distort the global market, placing our company at a disadvantage. Although the WTO made a clear ruling during the first raw material dispute at the beginning of this year, China has not taken any measures to lift these export restrictions. We regret that we have no choice but to sue us in order to completely resolve this matter."
