China University of quantum research won another new achievement to all solid state quantum network forward

Entanglement distribution is the core technology of constructing quantum network. Due to the unavoidable transmission loss in the channel, the entanglement distribution in the channel can only reach the current level of hundreds of kilometers. To achieve long-haul entanglement distribution, quantum-based quantum relay technology is needed. At present, the quantum storage or quantum relay schemes that have been experimentally verified are all based on the storage of a probabilistic light source. Since the light-emitting medium of a general light source is made up of a large number of atoms, which atoms emit light is indefinite and the probability of photon generation is generally lower than 1%, and each emission can not be guaranteed only one photon, so the long-range entanglement distribution of such programs is expected to be above the order of minutes.

Lee Chuan-feng The team used a self-organizing quantum dot (a man-made solid-state atomic system) to generate a deterministic single-photon source that was then transmitted through fiber optics to solid-state quantum memories on another optical platform 5 meters away. Using local optical heating, they adjusted the wavelength of a single photon to match the operating wavelength of the solid-state quantum memory and then stored a single photon in the research group's self-developed solid-state quantum memory and measured the stored fidelity of the single-photon polarization 91.3%. They then further experimented with multi-mode quantum storage of 100 time modes of deterministic single-photon that could store 100 pulses at a time with one single photon in each pulse, creating the highest number of modes in the world.

Li Chuanfeng said that the results of experiments demonstrate the two most important elements of accelerated entanglement distribution, that is, deterministic quantum light sources and multi-mode quantum storage. The former can exponentially accelerate the entanglement distribution, the latter can be linearly accelerated, and the combination of the two can be expected to shorten the time to long-range entanglement distribution to the order of milliseconds. The result also achieved for the first time two solid-state quantum nodes, that is, the docking of QDs with solid-state quantum memories, and an important step toward realizing an all-solid-state quantum network.

The achievement was published on the 15th of October in the internationally renowned academic journal Nature and Communication.
